Are there 2 versions of these. I thought one of these might be a proof but the Standard Catalog says they only exist in proof form.

There were two separate proof groups of the Discs in 67, one of All Stars and one of only SF Giants. While they were never issued at retail ( I don't think even on a limited test basis), the proofs for each player can be found in different degrees on completeness. I ended up with an unfinished proof sheet. I think Howard siad he won the 68 sheet that was recently auctioned

The only difference, in regard to versions, I have seen on the ‘68’s is that some have the silver foil and some have the plain white stock. I’m unsure if collectors would consider these variations, but they are definitely different. |

I have a Gene Alley proof from 1968 that is on a white background, not silver. I would think that is possible in 1967 as well.

Just a guess here. I owned years ago a 1968 Mantle on paper that had a similar crease to your Alley. I also owned a Rose on foil no crease (from the Halper collection). I have seen at least 4 1967 proof sheets and a handfull of assorted singles and have never seen a 1967 on paper - only foil. I presume the origins will remain a mystery if and until one shows up. Also curious why the 1968 seems so much harder than the 1967.

As for addressing the original question, Mark hit the nail on the head. I believe the original 2 pictures are the same. They both are silver foil. The pictures are shot with different lighting and at a different angle.

I have seen some of those creased 68's as well over the years. With proofs it's sometimes a matter of what part of the process survived or who purloined it.
The 68's are much more difficult than the 67's and IMO it's not close. Last edited by toppcat; 12-10-2017 at 12:58 PM. |
